Salil Gunashekar

SHORT CV

Dr Salil Gunashekar is a senior analyst at RAND Europe working in the area of science and technology policy with a particular interest in evolving research systems and the socio-economic impact of emerging technologies. Salil has been involved in research and policy analysis studies for a number of clients both in the UK and Europe such as the European Commission the English Department of Health, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, the British Standards Institution, the Digital Catapult, the Higher Education Funding Council for England, and various UK universities. The projects have covered topics ranging from open science, research impact (including scientometrics) and grand challenges, to the Internet of Things, blockchain technology, and technology foresight. He recently managed a study for the European Commission to develop an online monitoring system for open science trends in the EU. With a technical background in wireless communications engineering, Salil previously worked as a research associate at the University of Leicester within the Departments of Engineering and Computer Science. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Leicester in 2006 where he also obtained an M.Sc. in information and communications engineering in 2003. Before attending Leicester, he obtained an M.Sc. in informatics from the University of Delhi. In 2000, he graduated with an honours degree in physics from the University of Delhi.

Salil will deliver a presentation describing RAND Europe’s approach towards developing the recently launched pilot open science monitor for the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission.
