Fostering a FAIR research culture - what works?

This workshop will explore some examples where successes have been realised and consider if these are extensible to other domains. This work will feed into recommendations being developed by the FAIRsFAIR project to help improve FAIR policy and practice.

Workshop abstract

Making FAIR data a reality requires a culture change among researchers in all disciplines but also depends upon other stakeholders in the research ecosystem actively playing their parts in supporting and encouraging this change. Researchers need access to research infrastructures that support the generation of FAIR data and they need access to trusted data repositories to enable their data to be made FAIR over time. Researchers require access to tools and standards that they can employ to make their data FAIR as well as education and training on how and when to use them most effectively. Researchers need alignment between the range of policies influencing how they work including those from funders, employers and publishers. Recognising the complex ecosystem that researchers work in, a number of the INFRAEOSC projects and other initiatives are actively working to map the environment for different domains and to identify examples of what works when trying to incentivise FAIR data practices. This workshop will explore some examples where successes have been realised and consider if these are extensible to other domains. This work will feed into recommendations being developed by the FAIRsFAIR project to help improve FAIR policy and practice.

target audience

This workshop aims to bring together a broad range of stakeholders to consider how best to support the transition to a FAIR research culture. As such, this workshop will be relevant for policy makers and funders, researchers, research infrastructures, research performing organisations, publishers, service providers and research support staff.

  • Bottom up - what works? | FAIRsharing, ExPaNDS | 30 minutes for short talks | 15 min for open discussion
    The panel will share some examples of successful approaches to foster FAIR practice emerging from research communities.
    Each panellists will have 5 minutes to briefly introduce the approach, state why they think it has been effective, and consider whether there are lessons that could be taken forward by others.

  • Top down - what works?
  • Panel discussion on challenges - what isn’t working well and what needs to change? | 25 minutes
    Open discussion to collect ideas on how to remove barriers. In particular, identifying opportunities to test successful approaches shared earlier in new contexts.
